Update from the School Board
Greetings from the St. John Lutheran School Board. I wanted to provide an update regarding recent activity on the board and express my thanks to our parents and staff for their patience as we prepare for the forthcoming school year.
We are thrilled to share that at a recent voter’s assembly, Joel Burgener, a St. John member and current Centennial High School science teacher, was approved overwhelmingly by our congregation to serve as our new principal in the coming academic year. Joel is a one-time student of the Lutheran School Association in Decatur. His wife and three children are members at St. John. We’ll soon be announcing some events where you will have the chance to meet Joel in person.
As a board we also wanted to convey our heartfelt thanks to our staff who are departing us this year. After serving our school faithfully for many years, we extend our gratitude to Dan Yagow and Randy Niemann for their tireless dedication. We also want to thank Ralph Leffler for his seven years of service as principal for his grace, professionalism and for all he has done for our school as he (again) retires. We love you all and are grateful for all you have done for St. John.
In our effort to fill these very large shoes, the board has been meeting to review candidates that we have received from the district office as well as names submitted by congregation members. We hope to interview our top prospects by phone next week and to soon bring a recommendation to our voters shortly thereafter at a special voter’s meeting. We recognize the urgency of finding highly qualified staff.
No other changes in staff responsibilities are planned at this time. We will review the skill sets of our teachers and work with them to find the best ways to utilize their talents as we bring on additional staff.
One question that was addressed to the board at Tuesday’s meeting was whether we were looking to consolidate classrooms. This is not our plan and has not been discussed as a topic by the board prior to this question being raised.
Thanks for your patience with us as we look to bring on talented new staff. Please let us know any further questions or concerns that you may have.
Blessings!
Steve Ruhlig, School Board Chair
Happy Baptism Birthdays!
We would like to acknowledge our students whose Baptism Birthdays were celebrated in Chapel this week. Happy Baptism Birthday to Noah L.!

Do You Need F.A.I.T.H. Hours?
Information in the F.A.I.T.H. Binder will be tallied soon. There are a few families who have not yet fulfilled their 20 hours. Please take a look at the binder and update it if you have not recorded all of your hours. If you are in need of hours, watch the newsletter, ask your child’s teacher, or stop by the school office and we will see if we have any jobs that need to be done. (Don’t forget the car wash on Saturday.)
Get Ready For A Mountaintop Experience!
Got Tell It on the Mountain
Where Jesus christ is Lord
June 17th-21st
At VBS this summer, children will gather their gear and set out on an expedition to learn about our one true God. Shout it from the peak’s summit – with Him, it’s possible to scale any mountain that’s ahead.
VBS is open to all children age 3 through completed 5th grade. Registration forms will be sent home with students next week. Additional forms are available on the Narthex table by the sanctuary.
Completed forms can be returned to school office or put in the box on the Narthex table.
Volunteers are needed to make VBS a success. Youth who have completed 6th –12th grade may sign up for their preferred area.
Please see the bulletin board by the Fellowship Hall for more information.

For our service project this year, the kindergarten class at St. John Lutheran School will be working with the United Way to collect new underwear. Donations will be used by the United Way to help people in Champaign County. We request new underwear still in the packaging. Packages range from 2-12 pair per package. You can donate boys’, girls’, men’s, or women’s underwear. There is a need for all sizes, but especially adult sizes. Donations can be brought to the box outside the school office at 509 South Mattis from Monday, May 13th to Friday, May 24th, 2013. Last year we collected 483 pair of new underwear and came very close to achieving our goal. This year we hope to reach 500. Please consider making a donation for a worthwhile cause.
Help us collect 500 pair before the start of the Indy 500!
