Dear Parents,

It has been wonderful seeing many of you this week as you've dropped off your child(ren).  In case I haven't had the opportunity to say it, I wish you all a very HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

We had a wonderful Christmas Around the World party on Monday upon our return.  Thank you very much for the goodies that you sent in and/or coming in to help out on that day.  The kids had a fun time...and it was a nice way to welcome them back to school!  They were sent home that day with a Christmas "goody bag" full of fun things from our 3 week study of Christmas and also some items to share with you, their families.  Enjoy!

Thank you all so very much for the wonderfully thoughtful Christmas gifts you gave to me.  You are all so generous!

We have started our unit on winter and Polar Animals.  This will be followed by our space theme/unit.  Have you started to work on your space ship??  They will be due at school on January 16th and you will find them flying in our room!

This Friday ends the 2nd quarter of the year.  Can you believe it?  wow!  I will be doing assessments this week and next, with report cards coming home on the 16th.  PLEASE send in your church/Sunday school forms this week!
If anyone is available to help with the assessments, please see me.  This week, I plan on doing some Thursday & Friday morning and afternoon...let me know if there's a time that works for you.  I'm looking at from 9-9:45, 10:25-11:25, and 1:45-2:30.  Next week, those same times on Monday and Tuesday (if necessary).  Just drop me a note, email, talk to me in the morning, or give me a phone call.

The December Book-It form is due, and the January form was sent out before break.  Also, if you plan on ordering Scholastic Books, please send that in by Friday.  The January snack schedule was sent home before break as well...please let me know if you need another.

The flu season is upon us.  If you would like to donate a container of Lysol Disinfectant wipes or a can of Lysol spray for our classroom that would be great.  I can do as much as I can to make sure our classroom is 'germ free'.  Along the same lines, if your child has a fever or has been vomiting within the previous 24 hour period, please do not send him/her to school.  We will always have runny noses, coughing, etc....but, if a fever is present, then the other children in the classroom are at risk of catching the illness.  Thanks for your understanding.

Take care...stay warm...and God's blessings in the year 2009 and beyond!
Janine Greene

Good morning!  Hope you are staying warm and safe this morning!

We will be having our school Christmas service on Tuesday, December 16th.  All students of the school will participate in the service.  It is a service, so we ask that you dress in church clothing and refrain from taking pictures or video during the service.  Please bring your child to our classroom at 6:10 .  You may leave coats there if you wish.  You will return to the classroom to pick up your child after the service.  After you drop your child off in the classroom, please enter the gym quietly as there will be a short music concert before the service.

I will be sending home a Christmas Around the World Party schedule soon.    I will need parent helpers at various times during the day.  If you can help, please let me know as soon as possible.  Remember that you will receive 1 hour of FAITH hour credit for each hour that you help in the classroom.  We do have a full day of school this Friday.  We will celebrate different customs of the world all through our day with our “party” beginning at the start of the day and continuing throughout.  We have a two week Christmas Break and will return to class on Monday, January 5th.

I believe I have everything we need for our party now.  Thanks for stepping up and volunteering to donate something.  Make sure you record it in the FAITH hours book in the office.

Thanks so much to Emily Fuentes and her family for the donation of tamales last Friday for our study of Mexico.  Emily is a student in Mrs. Tappendorf's class and her family owns the El Toro restaurants in the area.  The tamales were a real treat for us!

We will be having rehearsal for our Christmas service on Monday and Tuesday mornings.

We have several days of bad weather predicted for this week.  Please watch the weather and stay tuned in to local reports.  Allow plenty of time to arrive safely at school.  We plan on taking the children outside for recess times unless the real temperature or wind chill is below 20 degrees.  Please send your child with all of the warm clothing they will need to be protected outside.  If there is snow on the ground, your child should have both snow pants and boots.  Thank you for your help.

I will be in touch regarding the party of Friday.  It will be a full day of fun!

God’s Blessings,
Janine Greene

We are having fun learning how Christmas is celebrated in different countries.  We have been decorating our room with Christmas ornaments and decorations from the countries we have learned about so far.  Things are going well.  Everyone should have a nice keepsake book when we are finished. Thank you so much for the delicious snacks that you have made or sent in on your given snack day.  It's been so much fun for the kids to taste things from other countries!  You have made this even more special for the children!  A big thank you!

I hope you enjoyed the Ice Skating Party that the PTF held this past Monday.  I was unable to attend for two reasons:  1.  my son had a Cub Scout Family Christmas party   2.  My daughter Bella has 6 stitches in her chin with the instructions not to do anything that might lead to more!      I am sure the party was enjoyed by all!

We will be having our school Christmas service on Tuesday, December 16th.  All students of the school will participate in the service.  You will be receiving more information about it soon.  It is a service, so we ask that you dress in church clothing.

I will be sending home a Christmas Around the World Party schedule soon.    I will need parent helpers at various times during the day.  If you can help, please let me know as soon as possible.  Remember that you will receive 1 hour of FAITH hour credit for each hour that you help in the classroom.

Senora Martina is helping us learn some Christmas traditions from Mexico and for the next two weeks, both kindergarten classes will meet together for a 40 minute Spanish period.  The Fuentes family is providing tamales for our class to taste this week.  We thank them for their help!

This summer I had a sign up sheet at orientation.  Those signing up for items for the Christmas Around the World party include:

St. Basil's Cake:   ????  (this is just cupcakes with a gold coin hidden inside one of them)

Pinata--J.P B.

2 Bags of candy or small items for Pinata:  Sarah A.

Wassail:  Linda P.

Mexican Hot Chocolate:   ????

St. Lucia rolls:  Annabel T.

Yule Log:  Brianna R.

Paper plates, napkins, forks:  Jake C.

I still need someone to donate 2 bags of candies that are individually wrapped such as candy kisses, etc.  Please contact me if you can donate 2 bags of candy.
I still need someone to make Mexican Hot Chocolate.  This is just hot chocolate with a candy cane in it....

Your family receives one hour of credit towards your FAITH hours for each of the line items that you help provide.

Dear Families of my wonderful Kindergarten class,

God's blessing to you and yours this Thanksgiving time.  I pray that you all enjoy safe travels and a wonderful time with family and friends.  There are so many things to be thankful for...and for me, I have 13 blessings that I get to enjoy every day during school.  Thank you for entrusting me with your children.  I am truly thankful to be their teacher!

I sent home a snack schedule for December.  You will notice that on the back of that calendar is a listing of the dates with the given country that we will be studying that day.  I also included four websites on the back that will give you ideas for a snack to make that comes from the country that is being studied on your snack day.  Please don't feel obligated to make something from that country...it's just a fun idea!  If you don't have time to make/bake something....you could always check out the grocery store's "international food aisle".

I sent home Scholastic Book Order forms this week.  Please try to return your order by Friday Dec. 5th  This will be the last order I do before Christmas...  I know that these would make wonderful gifts to have under your tree...and they are SO reasonably priced!

Please continue to work with your children at home on their letters, letter sounds, and reading from the Family Times that comes home every week.  It really does make a difference!

The weeks following Thanksgiving will be filled with Christmas Around the World projects and learning.  We will be "traveling" to the different continents and countries and learning about their customs and traditions in celebrating Christmas.  We then have a day-long "Christmas Around the World" party on our last day of school before the holiday break.   It is a fun-filled, busy, three weeks!  I am looking forward to it!  Most of the days our afternoons will be filled with these activities.  I feel that we still need to maintain our academic block time in the morning, as that is when we have the biggest chunk of time without many interruptions...therefore, the Christmas Around the World learning and activities will be done in the afternoons.

Please check out the party sheet inside the classroom.  There are still some items needed for our Christmas party...see if you can help!

Again, enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend.

God’s Blessings,
Janine Greene

Hello Parents!  It was so wonderful to sit down with you last week at conferences and talk with you about your child(ren).  They are all wonderful and I enjoy being their teacher.  Thank you for sharing them with me and with St. John Lutheran School.  If you ever have a question, comment, or concern about your child, our classroom, or anything like that, please don't hesitate to drop in to see me (after school is usually the best time).  I always enjoy talking with you.

We have a new student in our classroom. David Kim joined us today and we welcome him and his family.  We are very happy that David is part of our class.  Please remember that we now have 13 students when sending in your snack on your snack day!  Thanks! If you see David and/or his family please be sure to greet them and welcome them to St. John!

We have a busy and exciting week planned.  Our school will be holding a Veteran’s Day Observance at 10:30 on Tuesday.  You are all welcome and invited to attend.  On Thursday K-2 will be going to the Virginia Theater to see “Junie B. Jones”.  We leave the school at 9:30 and return at 11:30 .  Friday afternoon, an instructor from Anita Purves Nature Center will be coming to our classroom and bringing an owl.  We have been learning about owls and other nocturnal animals and this will be a great way to complete our study.

I sent home Scholastic Book Order forms last week.  Please try to return your order by this Friday Nov. 14th.  This MAY be the last order I do before Christmas....if you would like me to do one in December, please express interest.  I know that these would make wonderful gifts to have under your tree...and they are SO reasonably priced!
