We will be having our school Christmas service on Tuesday, December 16th.  All students of the school will participate in the service.  It is a service, so we ask that you dress in church clothing and refrain from taking pictures or video during the service.  Please bring your child to our classroom at 6:10.  You may leave coats there if you wish.  You will return to the classroom to pick up your child after the service.  After you drop your child off in the classroom, please enter the gym quietly as there will be a short music concert before the service.

I will be sending home a Christmas Around the World Party schedule soon.    I will need parent helpers at various times during the day.  If you can help, please let me know as soon as possible.  Remember that you will receive 1 hour of FAITH hour credit for each hour that you help in the classroom.  We do have a full day of school this Friday.  We will celebrate different customs of the world all through our day with our “party” beginning at the start of the day and continuing throughout.  We have a two week Christmas Break and will return to class on Monday, January 5th.

I believe I have everything we need for our party now.  Thanks for stepping up and volunteering to donate something.  Make sure you record it in the FAITH hours book in the office.

We will be having rehearsal for our Christmas service on Monday and Tuesday mornings.

We have several days of bad weather predicted for this week.  Please watch the weather and stay tuned in to local reports.  Allow plenty of time to arrive safely at school.  We plan on taking the children outside for recess times unless the real temperature or wind chill is below 20 degrees.  Please send your child with all of the warm clothing they will need to be protected outside.  If there is snow on the ground, your child should have both snow pants and boots.  Thank you for your help.

I hope you all enjoy a Merry Christmas with family and friends.

We are having fun learning how Christmas is celebrated in different countries.  We have been decorating our room with Christmas ornaments and decorations from the countries we have learned about so far.  Things are going well.  Everyone should have a nice keepsake book when we are finished.

The school Ice Skating party hosted by PTF is tonight from 6-8.  This is a wonderful holiday event that usually has a wonderful turnout.  It is fun for the whole family.  Bring a snack to share and enjoy skating and visiting with others to get in the holiday spirit!

Senora Martina is helping us learn some Christmas traditions from Mexico and for the next two weeks, both kindergarten classes will meet together for a 40 minute Spanish period.  The Fuentes family is providing tamales for our class to taste this week.  We thank them for their help!

This summer I had a sign up sheet at orientation.  Those signing up for items for the Christmas Around the World party include:
    Emily F., piñata
2 bags of candy or small items for the piñata, Emily F.

  • I still need someone to donate 2 bags of candies that are individually wrapped such as candy kisses, etc.  Please contact me if you can donate 2 bags of candy.
  • I still need someone to make some wassail (hot holiday punch) in a crock pot.  I have a recipe.  Please contact me if you can help.

We will begin our study of Christmas Around the World when we come back to school on Monday.  We will be learning about the Christmas customs and traditions in many different countries.  A snack schedule was sent home last week listing the date, the person who should provide snack, and the country that we are learning about for that day.  If you can think of something simple to send for your snack day that ties in to the country we are learning about it would make it fun and meaningful.  It doesn’t have to be fancy or a lot of trouble.  For example, the tradition of Christmas trees originated in Germany, so for snack you could send Little Debbie cakes or brownies in a Christmas tree shape.  A list of web sites was provided on the bottom of the snack schedule if you are interested in looking up recipes or traditional holiday foods that come from different countries.  If you are to provide an airplane treat, simply pack the snack into ten separate snack baggies.  It should be some kind of finger food suck as popcorn, dry cereal, or crackers, etc.  Anything that we can eat from our chairs while sitting on the rug without making a mess will work.  Thank you for your help and if you have questions about it, please feel free to contact me.  If you have any items or money from the countries we are learning about, please feel free to send them to school to show and share.  We will not be doing our regular math lessons during December.  We will be doing different math activities such as counting to ten in different languages, focusing on learning our numbers and number words from 0-10, reviewing order words from first to twelfth, and patterning.

Remember to fill out the Book-It form for November and return it to school this week.  I will send the December forms home this week.

Book orders are due by Friday, December 5th.  I will need to get the order turned in right away to receive it by our Christmas break.  If you would like your order to be kept a secret, I would be glad to give the order to you privately.

We will be having our school Christmas service on Tuesday, December 16th.  All students of the school will participate in the service.  You will be receiving more information about it soon.  It is a service, so we ask that you dress in church clothing.

I will be sending home a Christmas Around the World Party schedule soon.  This summer some of you signed up to help with the party by bringing items for our party to be held all day on Friday, December 19th.  I will remind everyone what they signed up for and also send a schedule of what we will be doing throughout the day.  I will need parent helpers at various times during the day.  If you can help, please let me know as soon as possible.

We had a wonderful and fairly relaxing time with our family last week.  Both weddings we attended were beautiful.  The first was a mountain lodge wedding in Estes Park, Colorado and the second was a beach wedding in Key Largo, Florida.  We left the beach at eleven o’clock Saturday morning with a temperature of 84.  We spent 12 hours in the car but gave up our hopes of driving all night.  We needed beds!  After spending the night near Chattanooga, we then drove another 9 hours Sunday and arrived home to snow.  Guess which weather I liked better!  It is good to be home and I am looking forward to our Christmas studies.  As it came time to prepare supper tonight and do my lesson plans, I realized it is back to reality and back to work.  I look forward to seeing everyone soon.  I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends.

God’s Blessings,
Julie Tappendorf

I will be at school this week but gone next week so I am sending both weeks of lesson plans together.  Mrs. Faye Drews will be the substitute teacher while I am away.  Please note that there is an early dismissal the day before Thanksgiving.  School will dismiss at 11:30 on Wednesday, November 26th.

Our library schedule has been changed for this week only.  We will be going to the St. John library on Tuesday afternoon of this week.  We will still be going to the bookmobile that morning.  The Bookmobile did not come last week due to Veteran’s Day.  Remember to send ALL library books to school on Tuesday, November 18th.

On Thursday afternoon the whole school will be attending the dress rehearsal of the 7th and 8th grade play called “Douglie the Uckling”.  Families are invited to attend the performance on Thursday evening, November 20th at 6:30.  There will be a dessert bar after the Thursday evening program with a free will offering to help the 7th grade class raise funds for their 8th grade class trip to Gettysburg and Washington DC.  There will be a second performance on Saturday morning, November 22nd at 10:00.

We enjoyed the Junie B. Jones play on Thursday.  There was a lot of singing and dancing.  We also enjoyed our classroom visit by Quasi the owl.  It was a lot of fun to see an owl up close after learning about them.  We also saw real owl pellets and asked many good questions.

We finished our second unit in our reading series.  I gave the Unit 2 test on Friday and I will be sending that home to you this week.  I will also send home the reading timed test log for Unit 2 and the Unit 2 weekly assessments.  I hope you will look at these to see where your child is making progress or where they may be struggling.

We will begin our study of Christmas Around the World when we come back to school after Thanksgiving.  We will be learning about the Christmas customs and traditions in many different countries.  I will be sending out a snack schedule this week that will provide a list of the countries we are studying each day.  I addition, I will be asking if you can help provide special snacks to correspond with the countries we are learning about for specific days or provide special “airplane treats” for the days we fly to new continents.  Please pay close attention to the schedule and contact me if you have any questions.

Remember to fill out the Book-It form for November and return it to school after Thanksgiving.  I will send the form home for December after I return.

The December hot lunch menu is due in the office on Monday.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families and have safe travels.

Thank you for scheduling a conference time.  I enjoyed meeting with each of you and I look forward to the rest of the year.  Please feel free to contact me any time you have questions or concerns.  The next conferences will be scheduled in February.  Thank you for returning the report cards so promptly.  All of the report cards have been returned.

We have a busy and exciting week planned.  Our school will be holding a Veteran’s Day Observance at 10:30 on Tuesday.  You are all welcome and invited to attend.  On Thursday K-2 will be going to the Virginia Theater to see “Junie B. Jones”.  We leave the school at 9:30 and return at 11:30.  Friday afternoon, an instructor from Anita Purves Nature Center will be coming to our classroom and bringing an owl.  We have been learning about owls and other nocturnal animals and this will be a great way to complete our study.

We are finishing our second unit in our reading series.  There will be a unit test at the end of the week in addition to the weekly assessment and timed reading test.  I am very pleased in the progress the students are making towards becoming fluent readers.  Continue to have them read to you every day.  Periodically review the color, number, and high frequency words that have been taught.  Your child should be able to recognize the (a) and (i) vowel sounds in addition to word family words such as at, am, an, in, it, ig.

I don’t have a lot of news this week since I just spoke with each of you.  Thank you for the wonderful year we’ve had so far.
