Each year the librarian association prepares a list of books for kindergarteners through third graders to read. This list of titles is called the Monarch Book list. Upon reading or listening to at least five books from the list, a child can vote for his/her favorite book. Voting occurs in February. Schools all over Illinois participate in this activity. The 2008 winner was If I Built a Car by Chris Van Dusen. A list of the current Monarch titles can be found on the back of this note. We have a copy of each title in our school library. Books are available at the Champaign Public Library too.
There is a huge butterfly on the wall near the fellowship hall. Every time a child reads or listens to a book from the list, a circle with the child’s name on it will be added to the butterfly. Books read in class from the Monarch list will count towards a child’s five books. If you read a title at home just send a note to your child’s teacher and I will make sure to add a circle to the butterfly. AR quizzes are available for most of the books on the list. For every 5 books a child reads, the child will receive a Monical’s Individual Pizza Certificate. Please remember these titles cover a wide range of reading abilities, interests and topics. You may want to preview books or read them with your child.
Happy Reading, Mrs. Block
