St. John Lutheran School Board Minutes

August 5th, 2008


The board convened at 5:30 PM with the following present: 
Board Members: Larry Jacobsen, Jayne Wachtel, Steve Ruhlig, Jay Walker, Ralph Leffler, Mark Pelafos, Dan Martin
Others: Herb Krueger, Greg DeYoung, Monica Taylor

Meeting opened @ 6:30pm

Visitor Comments

Herb will present material at the next Board meeting for budgetary purposes.

Approval of Minutes

Motion to approve July minutes M/S/C 

PTF

  • Written report presented.
  • Back to School Teacher Appreciation was a recent PTF event
  • A new parent friendly format will be used in 4 of the regular PTF meetings. (Sept/Nov/Feb/ May)
  • The preliminary budget for the upcoming school year was established, and it will be voted on at the August meeting.
  • PTF Calendar – There will be a Family Game Night held on January 23.
  • There are two PTF positions still available.
    • Logo Items Chair
    • Room Representative for Kindergarten

Marketing Committee

  • American Dowell should be installing signs within 2-3 weeks.
  • St. John car magnets – Sample created by Michele DeYoung
  • WBGL – St. John announcements are continuing
  • Sign at Marketplace Mall is still ongoing.
  • There is a “School Tours” sign on Mattis
  • A 2500 piece St. John mailer has been sent within the Champaign area.
  • The next meeting will be set for late August.

Principal’s Report

  • Written report presented.
  • Enrollment – We are currently at 206 as compared to 209 one year ago.
  • Staff In-service Training – The faculty met on 8/4 & 8/5 to prepare for the school year. CPR and First Aid training is scheduled for 8/7.
  • Staffing – All teaching positions have been filled.
  • Faculty meetings – Faculty meetings to be held on Wednesdays after school at 3:40. The complete faculty will meet on the first Wednesday of each month, with the other Wednesdays set aside for primary, intermediate, and junior high levels. Special arrangements will be made during Advent and Lent.
  • Upcoming Events
    • August 9 – Little Lamb Work Day
    • August 10 or 14 – Little Lamb parent orientation
    • August 11 or 12 – Parent and student orientation for kindergarten and grades 5-8 (Grades 1-4 will conduct home visits)
    • August 12 – Play date w/ Mrs. Niemann for returning 4’s
    • August 17 – Rededication Sunday and teacher installation
    • August 20 – First day of school
    • August 24 – Little Lamb Open House
    • August 25 – First day of school for Little Lamb
    • August 29 – Chapel family brown bag picnic
    • September 1 – Labor Day – No school
    • September 5 – PTF Back to School Picnic
    • September 5&6 – Scholastic Book Fair

 

Old Business

  • NLSA – Ralph presented the introduction from the self-study report that outlines the various standards for meeting the NLSA standards. Ralph is putting together a list of potential nominees for the various committees that will be required.

New Business

  • School Board representative to the Finance Board for the 2nd Tuesday of the month.. After discussion, it was decided that Herb and Danny would communicate agendas to know each others’ topics of discussion.
  • Discussion ensured about a budget review and possibly freezing some line items.

Motion made that we freeze the spending on the student recruitment line item for the 2008 budget. Any marketing expenses (with a limit of $3,000) would be taken out of special gifts . M/S/C

2008/2009 Student-Parent Handbook and 2008/2009 Athletic Handbook

Motion made to approve the 2008/2009 Student-Parent Handbook as presented. M/S/C

Motion made to approve the 2008/2009 Athletic Handbook with the following addition of a responsibility of the Athletic Director. M/S/C
“Oversee the housing and registration of athletes and coaches for state tournaments.”

  • School Report Card – Ralph presented the School Board with the 2007/2008 school year.

Motion made to accept the 2007/2008 School Report Card as presented. M/S/C

Executive Session

  • Motion made to approve the 2008/2009 Coaches List as presented. M/S/C
    • 5/6 Volleyball – Mike and Lynn Marassa
    • 7/8 Volleyball – Jeff Demith and Gayle Holderfield
    • Soccer – Duane Miller
    • Cross Country – Ed Drebes
    • 5/6 Girls B-Ball – Jay Young
    • 7/8 Girls B-Ball – Jay Walker and Jeff Demith
    • 5/6 Boys B-Ball – Dean Hagen and Steve Carmichael
    • 7/8 Boys B-Ball – Dan Martin
    • Track – Ed Drebes and Eric Potter
