2007-2008 SCHOOL REPORT CARD

Please note that the school report card is attached to this newsletter.  Hard copies are available in the school office upon your e-mail request, or you may stop by and pick one up.

INFORMATION UPDATE

If you have information (e-mail address, phone number or home address) that has changed, please contact the school office so we can update our records.  The new school directory will be coming out in the near future and we would like it to have the most up-to-date information.

READING BUDDIES NEEDED

The first grade "Class of Wisdom" at St. John is looking for a few more reading buddies for this school year.  To qualify you need to be willing to spend approximately one half hour per month with a first grade child, sharing God's love with them, reading to them, listening to them read to you, sharing your stories with them, and just getting to know them.  Currently we have 12 adults to work with the 21 first graders.  If you are interested in this or would like more information, please contact Pam Haase at 359-1714 or 352-6008 before Sept. 22.   Our first get-together will be on Monday, September 29th, at 1:00.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO COUNT CHAPEL OFFERING?

We are looking for one or two people to count chapel offering items for this semester.  It probably would take approximately 1-2 hours a week.  If you are interested, please contact Pam Haase at 359-1714 or 352-6008.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR INFORMATION

Friday, September 5th, from 5-7pm and Saturday, September 6th, from 9-noon, we will be hosting a fall Scholastic Book Fair located in the gym lobby. Students and teachers will be able to preview books on Friday, September 5th and make their wish lists.

Our school will receive 60% of the profit from the fall Book Fair. (For the February Book Fair we will receive 70% of the profit. We receive a higher percentage at the second book fair because we are hosting two book fairs this year.) Between the two fairs it is our goal to purchase listening centers for Kindergarten through Second grade and the Reading Resource room. We would also like to purchase books for all the classrooms and the library.

***LIBRARY NEWS *** LIBRARY NEWS *** LIBRARY NEWS *** LIBRARY NEWS ***

Our hallways aren't so quiet any longer; they are filled with the sounds of active learning!

Just before the school year began, Laurie McDonald and her 4th grade daughter, Sarah, decorated the librarian’s desk. This year Sarah was the designer and it looks wonderful; stop by and see how creative she is!

We had great volunteers on the first day of school. Laura J., Nilmini W., Cindy A. and her daughter, Sarah, and my daughter, Robin C., were very busy. They were placing labels reading “Donated by The Champaign County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans” in $1,600 worth of new books, preparing new magazines and our favorite job - alphabetizing the book shelves. Sarah A. arranged several stuffed "reading friends" around the library. Thank you Sarah! D.W. and her gang look very happy here.

Last week the family of Ian Bush donated a box of books from Ian's personal library. Our students will enjoy these special books for a long time to come. Thank you Kathy, Taylor, and Holly for your generosity; may God grant you His peace and comfort.

Would you and your child like to be a member of the Birthday Book Club? This program encourages recreational reading and the books are certain to be enjoyed by St. John students. This is how the program works: Birthday Book Club books are located in the display case next to the school office. Choose a book that your child will be pleased to receive, fill out the simple form (also in the case), write a $10 check payable to the school and turn these in to one of our friendly secretaries. At a Chapel gathering, near the date of your child's birthday, Mr. Leffler will present the book to him or her. A nameplate will have been placed in the book, recording their gift. When children have finished reading their Birthday book, they'll return it to the school library so it can be shared with fellow students. In the past, books have also been donated in celebration of a new baby in the family, to honor a teacher, or in memory of someone dear to you child.

Have a great school year.

St. John librarian

MOPS

MOPS needs you!  The Mothers of Preschoolers group at St. John needs caring Christians to help in the Moppet childcare rooms.  The hours are 8:30 – 11:00 on selected Mondays throughout the school year.  You will need to play with some preschoolers, assist the teacher with the bible lesson and have fun!  Call Kim Schmidt at 664-3340 for details.

ATHLETICS

CONCESSSION HELP NEEDED

We are still looking for some help in the concession stand for Sat. Sept. 6th from 10:00 – 5:00 for home volleyball games.  We have two games that will be Tuesday, Sept. 16th beginning at 6:00 p.m. and one game that is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 7th beginning at 5:00.  If you are interested in working, this would be a great opportunity to get your FAITH hours in early.  You don’t have to have a child who is in athletics to enjoy coming and cheering on the RAMS sporting events and helping out St. John Athletics.  Parents of players will be assigned to work if we do not get enough responses.  Please contact Joy Lou at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   for details.

PHOTOGRAPHERS WANTED

The volleyball and soccer season is going to start up soon.  The athletic department is looking for someone to take photographs of students during the games.  If you are interested, please contact Joy Lou at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it    Your time would count toward your FAITH hours.
