Devotion/Religion

We have a devotion in the classroom on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.  Our religion class follows the CPH Voyages curriculum.  Our memory work goes along with our lessons.

Reading

We have adopted a new reading series.  It is Reading Street by Scott Foresman.  During reading instruction, we work on reading strategies for decoding and understanding.  We also work toward building fluency and confidence.  Reading 10-20 minutes at home each night is considered daily homework.  The reading series also covers phonics, spelling, grammar, and writing.

D.E.A.R. Time/Read Aloud

Each day we have D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) Time.  Students must have a book for this each day.  One from home, school library, or classroom library works fine.  There is also time each day for the teacher to read aloud to the students from chapter books.

Spelling

In class, students participate in activities that help them practice the week’s spelling words.  Whole group, individual, and partner activities are used.  Practice at home is strongly encouraged as well.  We have a pretest on Monday and the final test on Friday.  Students receive their practice test back to see which words need to be worked on for the final test.

Handwriting

Children review the printed formation of the letters of the alphabet.  The second graders also learn cursive.  Please do not try to learn cursive at home before we learn it at school.

Journal

We have time each day for journaling.

Library

Students have the opportunity to check out books from the
St. John Library and the Bookmobile once a week.

Calendar

Each day a different student is our “Student of the Day.”  He/she is our morning calendar leader who leads us through calendar activities.

Computer Lab

We go to the computer lab once a week.  In addition to using various educational programs, students may also take Accelerated Reader quizzes over books that either they have read or someone has read to them.

Spanish

Our Spanish teacher comes to the classroom once a week.

Math

Each day the students participate in a wide variety of mathematical activities.  Students learn through hands-on experiences, discussion, and exploration.  Math concepts such as computation, problem solving strategies, measurement, geometry, money, time, identifying patterns, fractions, graphs, and charts are studied and used.  Children have math homework most nights.  We complete Side A in class together, and Side B is for homework.  Please refer to Side A when doing homework if you have any questions.

Social Studies/Science

Our social studies themes are our past, all about work, and our government.  Our science themes for the year are earth science and the human body.
