CHAPEL OFFERING

The chapel offering that was collected during the Day School Christmas Service was $823.00.  This amount will be added to the monetary offerings collected during second semester to be sent to LAMP (Lutheran Association of Missionaries and Pilots U.S). Their mission is to proclaim the cross of Christ and share God’s love in Native American communities throughout North America.  It is estimated that fewer than 3% of the approximately 3 million Native American people know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.  Our monetary gifts will help Native American pastors and teachers address the complex needs and challenges facing Native American communities and bring Christ’s Kingdom to every Native American Nation.

NEW SPANISH TEACHER

We welcome Mrs. Martina Miranda-Lugo, our new Spanish teacher, to St. John School.  She has worked at other schools in our community and comes to us with strong recommendations.  Her first day with students will be Wednesday, January 16.  We thank Mr. Paul Apodaca for stepping in and helping us out during the first semester.

2007- 2008 TUITION STATEMENTS

Copies of your 2007-2008 tuition and band statement are available in the school office if you need them for tax purposes.  Please pick them up at your convenience.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

Our school will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair from Tuesday, February 12 to Saturday, February 16, 2008. Stop by before or after your children's parent teacher conferences to see all the great books!  This is a terrific chance to build your home libraries as well as your children's classroom libraries.  We encourage you to check out our book fair website at http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/stjohnls for more information.

We are also looking for volunteers to help advertise, set up, work during the fair, supply refreshments, and pack up after the fair.  By helping, you will not only earn faith hours, but you will also earn free books for your children's classrooms!  Sign up in the school office or contact Mrs. Rivers at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for more information.

JUNIOR HIGH DANCE

We are still looking for parents to help with our junior high semi-formal dance on Friday, February 15th.  We especially need parents to help with photography and to help clean up after the event.  If you can help, please contact Mrs. Rivers or Mrs. Greene.

CHOCOLATE NIGHT IS COMING!

You are invited to attend Chocolate Night at St. John Lutheran School on Thursday, January 31st from 5:30pm-7:00pm. During the evening we will explore chocolate through our five senses by traveling to different stations to measure, weigh, estimate, graph, count, pattern, taste, and paint with chocolate.  The evening will conclude with a story time where the children will be hearing stories with a chocolate theme.  This event is planned specifically for current kindergarten students and students who will be eligible for kindergarten in the fall of 2008.  Each student must have one parent with him/her to experience the different stations.  Due to space limitations and limited supplies, we ask that you do not bring siblings with you.  There will be a brief question and answer period for parents who want to know more about our school or wish to pick up registration information.  Please note the change:  Enter the school through the fellowship hall doors on the west.  Participants will not go home empty handed!

We need a volunteer to tape labels on folders and we need 3 volunteers to make chocolate play-doh. Recipe and supplies will be provided.  If you are available to help please contact the school office.

(Please let the school office know if your child has any allergies to chocolate.  359-1714)

FOOD, FUN & FELLOWSHIP

Please help support the class of 2009 by attending the Spaghetti Dinner/Dessert Auction/Talent Show on Saturday, January 26, 2008.  Tickets are for sale in the school office.  Proceeds from this event will help fund the Washington D.C. trip this fall. If you would like to bake for the Dessert Auction, please contact Wendy Wolter at 359-6997.  Thank you for your support!

******** LIBRARY NEWS *** LIBRARY NEWS *** LIBRARY NEWS*** LIBRARY NEWS ********

Over Christmas Break volunteer helpers were busy in our library.  Thank you to Mark Hills, Amber Moore, Peggy Olson, and Ben, Mary and Dennis Stremming.  Due to these hard-working St. John family members, the entire library was alphabetized and Accelerated Reader books were marked for our students. WOW!

Through our Birthday Book Club program, we helped to celebrate the birthdays of Sarah Slack, Jessica and Jason Palmberg, Megan Ashmore and Rachel Mihm.

Thank you very much Mei Lien and Kai Li Crandall and Fay Drews for donating great books to our school library.
Have you and your family visited the new Champaign Public Library yet?  It is amazing!  One of our student’s dads asked me if we needed a conveyer book return system like C.P.L. has.  I’ll have to look in to it!

SCRIP
Correction to last week: Statements will be sent out quarterly: March, June, September and December. Tuition credit payouts (yeah!!) will still be made twice a year: the first going toward your upcoming registration deposit and the second toward November tuition.

If you placed an order with us this week, thank you. Your order will be available for pick-up Wednesday, January 16th from 8 am – 3:15 pm. Please check your order before leaving as these gift cards/certificates are the same as cash.

Remember: If you need an extra information packet or enrollment form, they are available in the school office and on the Narthex table. You may also go to www.glscrip.com to view this program more closely. While there, click on "What's New" to see the long list of retailers offering increased discounts this month!

Box Tops Winter Collection
It is time to start turning in those nicely trimmed Box Tops. We will be actively collecting Box Tops until February 22.  At that time the class with the most neatly trimmed Box Tops will win a class Ice Cream Party.  The key word is neatly trimmed. For the Box Tops to count for the Ice Cream Party, the Box Tops need to be trimmed around the dotted line.  Thank you for supporting our school.

Market Day
This month's Market Day orders went home with students this week. They are due back to the school in two weeks. Just a reminder to please fill in the total quantity ordered on the back page. By filling in this space on the order sheet, it helps us to double check the number of items you requested against the number that is input during order entry. Don't forget, 10% of each order placed comes back to our school, and we need at least 50 orders each month. So every order counts. Thanks for supporting Market Day!
