St. John offers instrumental (Band) instruction to all students grades 5-8. Beginning instruction starts in fifth grade although it is possible for older students to start learning to play a band instrument if the schedule permits.
Instruction
Beginners have one 40-minute lesson each week and one full band rehearsal (40 minutes) each week. Full band rehearsals start 2nd quarter.
Advanced Band Students (grades 6-7-8) have one 40 minute lesson each week and two full band (40 minutes) rehearsal each week.
Students supply their own instruments. However, some instruments (i.e. Bass Clarinet, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, French Horn, Baritone (Euphonium) and Tuba) may be rented from the school for $50.00 per year. Beginning Percussionists (Drummers) rent to purchase a drum kit. Students who switch to another instrument are generally not charged a rental fee.
Concert and Performances
The Beginning Band performs in May at the Spring Concert. The Advanced Band plays for:
-
Veteran's Day Assembly & Programs
- The Annual Christmas Service
-
The Annual Music/Play
- The Annual Spring Concert
Additional performances have included playing on the radio (WDWS) and "Season's Greetings", a WEIU-TV Production in Charleston, Illinois. Next year the band will play at the annual Christmas "Festival of Trees". In addition, the band plays for various service clubs including Kiwanis and Rotary.
Participation
The band is growing in numbers. Currently 50% of the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders participate in band.
